PRESS RELEASE – FEBRUARY 2020

February 8, 2020

Over 150,000 Merseyside children are benefitting from fitness, sports classes and high-quality PE lessons and that is set to increase

A demand for fitness, sports coaching and high-quality PE lessons for children has led to the expansion of a local sports and coaching business. The move will ensure all schools across Merseyside & Cheshire can benefit from dedicated classes, as obesity levels for the region remain high.

More than 22000 children leave primary school severely obese. 28% of 2-15years were classed as overweight or obese. At the start of primary school one in 10 children are obese and by the end, that has increased to one in five. Those growing up in the most deprived communities are at the greatest risk. The chances of being obese are about twice that of those who live in the least deprived areas.

Through two new franchises, Wirral based Full of Beans Fitness and Sports Coaching, which runs classes in schools by trained PE Teachers & specialised Sports Coaches, will now cover the whole of the Wirral and south Liverpool. This means that even more children could take part in classes, which not only address fitness levels and sporting ability but also support mental health in young people.

The expansion follows an increase in demand from schools and parents, keen to support children with increased physical activity and improved mental health. Full of Beans also runs out of school classes, popular with parents during the school holidays etc. The original founder, Nicky Adams, sold her first franchise to Lauren Thirsk who set up in South Wirral and her business has doubled every year since.

Founder & Director Nicky Adams says e.g. “We are seeing first-hand the commitment from our schools in supporting pupils to increase their levels of physical activity and we work them to ensure all children have access to a variety of opportunities to suit the least active to the most sporty. We also offer some amazing mental health and self-development programmes and have achieved some fantastic results.

We are also members of the Children’s Activities Association so schools and parents know that we have been vetted in providing high quality services.

As part of the expansion, all Merseyside schools are eligible for a FREE PE Health Check.

Lesley Roach, Headteacher, Sacred Heart Catholic Primary school in Liverpool said “As a healthy school we promote the health and well-being of all our pupils in school and for the past year we have worked alongside Jordan and the Full of Beans team. They have delivered a range of extra-curricular clubs which have developed our children’s resilience and enabled them to be mentally healthy. The clubs have been tailored to meet the needs of our children and Jordan is passionate about offering new opportunities.

The clubs are very well organised and led by trained staff who are so enthusiastic and have really helped our children to develop their confidence when trying new activities.

Jordan and his team have developed excellent professional relationships with myself, staff and our children and we look forward to continuing to work with them.”

Esther one of our children said “Full of Beans and their self development programme, Mini Mermaids, has helped me in so many different ways. First of all, I used to have lots of worries but now I have a lot less. Before this, I was shy with new and unfamiliar people, but now I’m able to communicate with them more freely. Also, it’s helped my confidence to grow and I’m excited to try new and different things. The program has helped me understand a bit more about who I am and who I’d like to be. It has helped encourage me to follow my hopes and dreams.”

We would urge schools to place PE, physical activity and sport at the heart of their planning following the long year children have faced in lockdown. Through our work at Full of Beans, we have seen children who haven't just been affected physically but socially and emotionally as well. Ninety percent of parents reported they were worried that their children's activity dropped "dramatically" during this time. We support the Good School Guide in promoting #PRIORITSEPE alongside the amazing Sharron Davies MBE. Parents can also play a part outside of school. It's so important children have FUN and enjoy how they move their bodies and they will need to experience a variety of activities for them to be able to choose which they enjoy the most. For some, it maybe doing treasure hunts while on a dog walk, challenging their family on the monkey bars in the park, rock climbing, dance class or trying something brand new like joining a local footy team or gymnastics club with some friends. It is GREAT news that this coming week sees sports clubs opening up again and after school clubs can resume so ask for a trial if your child is nervous or unsure. Full of Beans clubs can be booked by clicking HERE. I think we all know how GREAT you feel after a class, bike ride, yoga or a run etc when endorphins have been released and that's what I want children to experience so they fall in love with that amazing feeling! Physical activity is also great for their social development and given we've been locked up and prevented for seeing people for a year, this is high on my list for all children right now. The graphic below shows just some of the benefits of being active and these aren't just for now but will help children for the rest of their lives - what better gift can we give them and I don't think there's been a better time to start. Parents - if you are struggling to know where to start, we can help you! Just give us a ring or send an email and we would be happy to give you some ideas.
